Student engaging in the Civic Cornerstone Fellowship conversations

The Civic Cornerstone Fellowship (CCF) is expanding to colleges and universities across the country. Building on its success through the Karsh Institute of Democracy at the University of Virginia, CCF offers a proven, research-informed model for fostering meaningful dialogue and civic engagement among students.

“We are excited to implement the Civic Cornerstone Fellowship at George Mason University because of the intentional approach to sustained dialogue and the opportunity to prepare students to engage with difference in constructive and mindful ways.” —Kristen Wright, Director of the Office of Community Engagement and Civic Learning at GMU

A Growing Network

CCF is now active at institutions across a range of campus contexts. Current partner campuses include:

  • Bowdoin College
  • University of Virginia's College at Wise

Launching in fall 2026:

  • Biola University
  • George Mason University

As the network grows, participating institutions are contributing to a shared effort to strengthen democratic culture.

“I have been craving spaces where I am pushed to think more critically and expansively, especially by engaging with perspectives different from my own.” —UVA CCF student

What It Means To Join the Network

CCF is designed to be both rigorous and adaptable. As the program expands to additional campuses, the Karsh Institute offers support through:

  • Curriculum and facilitation frameworks
  • Training and consultation
  • Toolkits and implementation guides
  • A growing network of partner institutions
  • A model that adapts to partners’ own contexts and goals while maintaining core principles and design

Program Design

CCF offers a research-informed approach to dialogue that treats it not simply as a method of communication, but as a formative practice—shaping how students listen, think, and act in public life.
