Building the American Dream: Work, Tech, and Community in a Shifting Economy

Building the American Dream: Work, Tech, and Community in a Shifting Economy

Yoni Appelbaum, Jamelle Bouie, Oren Cass, Annie Lowrey

Arturo Di Modica's Charging Bull sculpture in front of a background representing typical middle class American suburban homes, surrounded by a circle of coins.

As the nation nears the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we ask ourselves: How does the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness hold up today?

Through contrasting perspectives, speakers explore what opportunity means in 21st-century America—examining economic mobility, the changing nature of work, the rise of new technologies, and the evolving foundations of our social contract.

This session is produced by the Karsh Institute of Democracy in partnership with The Atlantic. Introduction by Ben Allen, Executive Director of the Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Virginia.
